With the unemployment rate at nearly 10 percent nationally, local churches may be searching for ways to be in ministry to those looking for work. One avenue of assistance is to offer career training, and an organization in Birmingham is offering free or reduced-tuition classes in construction trades. The Construction Education Foundation of Alabama, or CEFA, recently was awarded a Workforce Development Grant which has enabled the group to offer the training to qualified persons.

"We offer industry-certified training in electrical, plumbing, carpentry and HVAC," said Byron McCain, president of CEFA. "Any person who is looking to develop a skill that can provide lifetime employment is encouraged to participate."

CEFA is the recognized training organization for the commercial construction industry in the state of Alabama. Classes are organized with multiple entry points, so that as people apply and are accepted into the Workforce Development Grant program, they can enter the training almost immediately. The course lasts for 20 weeks, with classes two nights each week. Daytime training is an option based on demand.

McCain, the son of a United Methodist pastor, looks on the grant as an opportunity to be in ministry. "We hope church leaders will share this information. We need for people to apply immediately, and anyone at CEFA will be glad to answer questions they might have." McCain also said that CEFA staff members can attend meetings held at churches to explain the program. CEFA also welcomes the opportunity to work with any church that wishes to host a training program.
