YOUTH RALLY
"Salt & Light"
AUGUST 22, 2010
By the Lake at Camp Sumatanga
On Sunday, August 22, the youth (and their adult leaders) from churches of the Mountain Lakes District gathered at the lake at Camp Sumatanga for a joyful afternoon.  Jay Robinson and members of the Jacksonville State Wesley Foundation led games that brought the youth together.  They were fun, even if they couldn't pull off the circle trick (an inside joke for those attending). We are grateful to Jeff Prince and Roy Williams of the District United Methodist Men for cooking for our youth and to the United Methodist Women of the district for making a donation toward the food.  The UMW were also at Sumatanga for a Conference-wide event.
  After fun and food, the youth came together as Seth Lucas led us in worship with his band providing musical guidance.  The worship was inspiring as Matt Scott (son of Robin and Luanne Scott who grew up in Geraldine) was our preacher.  The youth pastors and pastors of the churches were ready as Matt's invitation was pointed to opening the hearts of all in attendance to God's call on their lives.  As darkness fell, many groups were praying together with clear guidance from the Holy Spirit.
  The pictures below give you some sense of the great afternoon we shared.  Our youth are such an asset, particularly as we help them grow in their faith and they acknowledge God's call on their lives.  Let's be examples and cover them in prayer.

ADVANCED LAY SPEAKER COURSE
"UNDERSTANDING THE TRINITY"
We had our Advanced Lay Leader Training at Camp Sumatanga on August 25. It was an outstanding weekend for the participants.  Rev. Lori Carden taught the class on Understanding the Trinity. The participants left there feeling good, feeling more equipped as they go back to there local church to share and look forward to the opportunities to speak in the pulpit.  We hope in the coming months we will have an agenda fpr present to those who desire to take the basic lay speaking training and Advanced Lay Leaders training in 2011. If you have any questions on these training courses, please call Cathy Williams at 205-243-9302 or the District Office.

                                                                  GREAT THINGS HAPPENING AT SAMUEL'S CHAPEL!

Brother Freddie Keener and the members of Samuel's Chapel are excited about the growth that they have had so far this year.  Through their van ministry, they have received 14 teenagers into the church.  They thank God for the challenges and opportunities He is providing.

They also had a successful VBS in late June, with several young people professing faith in Christ!

A new class for young adults was organized in June.  This additional class is off to a good start, and good results are being reported.

Congratulations Samuel's Chapel, Keep up the Good Work!  Praise be to God!

UMCOR nears full repenishment of health kits.
Now that UMCOR has replenished their stock of health kits, they are requesting Layette Kits and Birthing Kits.   UMCOR will respond to the needs of the people in Haiti for years to come, therefore leaders would like to move from preparing health kits to preparing layette kits and clean birthing kits.  These two kits, equipped for mothers and infants, will be in great demand as Haitians begin to rebuild their lives.
Here is what goes in each kit:
     Layette Kit Items Value:  $35 per kit
     Bundle the items inside one of the receiving blankets and secure with the diaper pins.
          * 6 cloth diapers
          * 2 shirts or 2 one-piece body suits
          * 2 baby washcloths
          * 2 gowns or sleepers
          * 2 diaper pins
          * 1 sweater open in the front

     Important Kit Assembly Information

     Birthing Kit Items Value:  $8
     Place these items inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag.
          * 1 hotel-size bar of soap (1 oz. and up)
          * 1 pair of clean latex gloves
          * 1 square yard of clear 4 mil plastic sheeting
          * 3 pieces of clean string each 12" long
